CeBIT 2006 Highlights
| CeBIT 2006 Highlights
CeBIT remains the biggest ICT exhibition in the world. Though many companies such as Nokia and Sony Ericcson prefer to reserve their announcements for 3GSM, their is still a lot of mobile news to be discovered. The main highlight was the announcement of new Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphones by well known vendors:
Main features: Conclusion : innovative through built-in GPS but otherwise featuring a rather average set of specs SGH-i310 music phone from SamSung Main features: Conclusion: another example of a high memory storage phone in the now well established music segment next to the Nokia N91, the SE W950,… Though Windows Mobile based smartphones consistently underperform compared to Symbian devices - especially on multimedia - the very fact main vendors (next to HTC) back the Operating System is significant for the future of Windows Mobile. After all sales of phones is (still) driven by the big mobile vendor brands, not the underlying operating system. In the “margin” Samsung also announced a 10-megapixel camera phone SGH-B600, in their traditional way of showing off the highest feature specifications. What the mobile relevance of such an over-specified camera might be, is anybody’s guess. Another highlight was the long anticipated anouncement of the Intel Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) / Microsoft Origamo Project. The first version has no built-in keyboard, is powered by Windows XP Tablet PC edition, features a 900 Mhz processor and will go on sale soon for less than 1000 USD. The UMPC will be built by 3 manufacturers (Asus, Samsung and Founder). The second generation will be smaller, featuring a keyboard. Though this certainly is an interesting announcement, the UMPC is miles away from the ultra mobile and pocketable Nokia 770 Internet Tablet which is about 3 times smaller and much cheaper. With a weigth of almost 2 pound, dragging the UMPC around - even at home - will be no small task.
