6 new features in Gmail

December 21st, 2008

The Internet search leader Google has been adding more bells and whistles to Gmail as part of its effort to gain ground on the longtime leaders, Microsoft and Yahoo in free e-mail.

Latest on the list are To-do list, video chat and some other features. These features not only add Gmail’s functionality, but also bring several new features right to your Gmail inbox. Here’s looking into the six new features in Gmail.

Google Inc is testing a new Gmail tool designed to help users keep a better track of their daily tasks.

The company has announced a new tool called `Tasks’ that is designed to help Gmail users create their daily to-do list. `Tasks’ sits in the same kind of Window as chats, so is visible while users read email, use the search function or do other tasks. The feature, which is coming out of Google Labs, is still in the testing phase.

To enable Tasks, go to Settings; click the Labs tab. Select `Enable’ next to `Tasks’ and then click `Save Changes’ at the bottom. Then, after Gmail refreshes, on the left under the `Contacts’ link, users can see a `Tasks’ link. Just click on it to get started.

To enter a new Task, users just need to click on an empty part of their list and start typing. No buttons to click and it’s saved automatically. Hit Return and there’s a new task right there.

Gmail users can also easily convert emails into tasks: select one or more messages and go to More Actions > Add to Tasks. (Or turn on keyboard shortcuts).

However, there is no time frame for the new feature to be officially added (if at all) to Gmail.

Get In On Google’s Holiday Giveaway

Get In On Google’s Holiday Giveaway

The holidays are almost here, and Google’s got some freebies for you — if you sign up soon.

The Gmail team is giving away sets of Gmail-themed stickers right now. Some are just for fun, like the glittery red Gmail logo sticker. Others have a specific function in mind, like the Gmail shortcut stickers that you can stick onto your keyboard to help remember hotkeys. (Google promises they peel off easily.)

There’s also a collectable bookplate-style sticker with a “This belongs to ____@gmail.com” space for your own inscription. It comes in three designs: one featuring an old-school computer, one with a e-mail-happy unicorn, and one with a friendly robot who’s just beaming with Gmail giddiness.

Google’s willing to send you a set of your own. All you have to do is ask — and send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Send me some Gmail stickers already
    P.O. Box 391420
    Mountain View, CA 94039-1420

Anyone outside the U.S. should make sure to include an international reply coupon. Otherwise, a regular $0.42 stamp on the inside envelope is all you need.

Google says it’ll send only one per person while supplies last, and — we know you were wondering — it promises it won’t collect any of your contact info.

Microsoft’s Black Friday and the Success of Xbox 360

    December 3rd, 2008

Microsoft announced today that on Black Friday its Xbox 360 game console outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 at a 3 to 1 ratio. That record weekend of sales puts the 360 over 25 million systems sold worldwide, surpassing the sales of the original Xbox

Say what you will, but Microsoft clearly learned from the mistakes it made in the last console cycle. It gambled at launch that being the first one to market (a year before rival Sony) and with more cost effective components (DVD rather than Blu-ray), would give them an advantage. Since then, Microsoft has created a robust online community with significant sales of digital content (simple games and extra content of game discs) and a respectable digital media strategy (sales of video downloads, streaming Netflix). And with the wide support of developers, it continues to offer more titles than its competitors.

Official: Pakistan group leaders linked to attacks

    December 3rd, 2008

A bomb disposal squad officer, center, takes a suspicious box to the police station after diffusing a bomb at Chhatrapati Shivaji train station in Mumbai, India, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008. Police on Wednesday discovered leftover explosives hidden in a bag in Mumbai’s main train station, a stunning new example of botched security after the deadly rampage that left the government open to accusations it missed warnings and bungled its response. (AP Photo)

MUMBAI, India (AP) — India suspects that two senior leaders of a banned Pakisanti militant group masterminded last week’s three-day terrorist attacks that killed 171 people in Mumbai, an Indian intelligence official said Thursday.

Evidence collected in the investigation of the deadly siege points to Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Yusuf Muzammil, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the details.

Lakhvi and Muzammil are believed to be top members of the outlawed Pakistani group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which India blames in attacks. Muzammil is the group’s chief of operations in Kashmir and other parts of India and Lakhvi its chief of operations, officials said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Pakistan on Thursday for meetings with civilian and military leaders after visiting Indian leaders in New Delhi. She aimed to raise pressure on Pakistan’s government to help get to the bottom of the terror attacks.

The U.S. wants Pakistan to do more to go after terror cells rooted in Pakistan. Rice traded places with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen, who was pushing the same message in Pakistan on Wednesday. He was in the Indian capital on Thursday.

Meanwhile, police found two bombs at Mumbai’s main train station nearly a week after they were left there by gunmen behind the attacks_ a stunning new example of the botched security that has sparked outrage in India since the deadly three-day siege.

The discovery Wednesday came as Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India is “determined to act decisively” following the attacks, saying the evidence was clear the gunmen came from Pakistan and their handlers are still there.

His words, the strongest yet from the government, came as thousands of Indians — many calling for war with Pakistan — held a vigil in Mumbai to mark one week since the start of the rampage.

While searching through a mound of about 150 bags, which police believed were left by the dozens of victims in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station, an officer found a suspicious-looking bag and called the bomb squad, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Bapu Domre. Inside were two 8.8-pound (4-kilogram) bombs, which were taken away and safely detonated, he said.

After the attacks, police found unexploded bombs at several of the sites, including two luxury hotels and a Jewish center.

It was not immediately clear why the bags at the station were not examined earlier. The station, which serves hundreds of thousands of commuters, was declared safe and reopened hours after the attack.

The discovery has added to increasing accusations that India’s security forces missed warnings and bungled its response to the Nov. 26-29 attacks.

Indian navy chief Sureesh Mehta has called the response to the attacks “a systemic failure.” The country’s top law enforcement official has resigned amid criticism that the 10 gunmen appeared better coordinated and better armed than police in Mumbai.
